The disease often has no early warning signs and the symptoms like diminished or blurred vision, double vision and appearance of floaters ( seeing moving black dots in the visual field) if at all, appear late in the course. This can adversely affect the job, reading habits, social interactions, outdoor life etc of such patients thus reducing the quality of life significantly.
Annual /Yearly screening of diabetic patients by visual acuity testing, dilated fundus examination, slit lamp biomicroscopy and perimetry can pick up early changes and enable early treatment intervention whereby the occurrence of new cases can be reduced even upto 90%
