A cataract is a clouding of the transparent lens which occurs as part of the normal ageing process of the body .It develops slowly and can affect one or both eyes.
People with cataract may find it to hard to see at night,or have problems with glare during the day or see haloes around light sources,or see things in twos.Poor vision caused by cataracts may also result in an increased risk of falling and depression.
Early cataractous changes can be corrected with glasses.If this does not help,surgery is the next option. In all types of surgeries ,the cataractous lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens known as an intraocular lens, which stays in the eye permanently is [a very effective option] the only effective treatment.
Cataract removal can be performed at any stage or age and no longer requires the so called ripening or maturing of the lens. Phacoemulsification is the most advanced cataract surgery.This procedure uses ultrasonic surgery to emulsify the cataract lens.Different types of Indian and Imported lenses are available for implantation in the eye.
Surgery is usually done on a daycare basis and performed under topical anaesthesia ie: without any pain.The patient is usually ambulatory on the day of surgery and can perform normal functions by the next day
